Ethical Journalism Lecture at Sheffield Hallam University
Date: 27 November 2018
Location: Sheffield Hallam University Media Arts & Communications Department, Journalism School
If journalism is to rise above the cacophony of the internet it must be based on a model of ethics, Chris Elliott, the EJN’s director, told 30 students and lecturers in the journalism department of Sheffield Hallam University.
Elliott spent an hour laying out the roots of ethical journalism and the role of self-regulation within a news organisation in creating transparency and accountability. He said that the key to a successful model of well-funded journalism is credibility as no-one will pay for something they don’t trust.
Trust only comes in any medium when the public instinctively turns to a source they have come to respect and value. Journalism founded on a set of ethical principles grows and maintains that trust.
