The Trust Story: Media Leaders from the Balkans and Turkey to Gather in Brussels
The Ethical Journalism Network (EJN) will gather prominent news organizations, media leaders, and stakeholders from the Western Balkans, Türkiye and the European Union, at the regional conference in Brussels on 2-3 December 2024. The participants including media partners from the region, representatives from the EU, the European Parliament, digital platforms, advertising organizations, and civil society, will discuss practical ways to restore public trust in media in the digital age.
“If public interest journalism is to survive this era of whirlwind change it will need to reinforce public trust in news media, an urgent task given how disinformation, propaganda and abusive communications have created uncertainty and confusion in the public space, and which has shaken trust in news,” said Aidan White, EJN president and founder, ahead of the conference titled “The Trust Story: Pathways to Quality Journalism in South East Europe and Türkiye in the Digital Age”.
The EJN event supported by UNESCO and the EU, and organized in partnership with Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) led by Reporters without Borders, will be an opportunity to emphasize the importance of ethical standards and will produce a set of recommendations aimed at digital platforms, advertisers, funders and the media.
This event is a key component of the EU-funded project Building Trust in Media in South East Europe: Support to Journalism as a Public Good, which is being implemented by UNESCO and the Ethical Journalism Network (EJN). The project is aimed at supporting freedom of expression in South East Europe, promoting free, independent, and pluralistic media, and tackling the rise of disinformation, especially in the online sphere.
