Council of Europe hearing on migration and media

The Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons and the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly held a joint hearing on the media portrayal of migrants during the Assembly session in Strasbourg on 10 October.

As well as drawing on the findings of the EJN’s 2015 report, Moving Stories, the EJN’s Tom Law shared the conclusions of the 17-country study conducted by the EJN for the International Centre for Migration Policy Development. The session also allowed the EJN to discuss Fatal Journeys, a report published the International Organisation of Migration’s Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC), which included a chapter by the EJN’s Director Aidan White and Ann Singleton – a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol – about the ‘Challenges faced by the media in reporting migrant deaths’. 

The hearing was in English and French with simultaneous interpretation into German, Italian, Russian and Turkish.
