Cherian George Advisor

Cherian George is professor of media studies at Hong Kong Baptist University’s department of journalism. He researches freedom of expression and censorship, and has a special interest in religious intolerance and hate propaganda. His books include Hate Spin: The Manufacture of Religious Offense and its Threat to Democracy (MIT Press, 2016).

Before entering academia, he was a journalist with The Straits Times in his native Singapore. He continues to practice professional journalism as the publisher and editor of What’s Up, a monthly current affairs newspaper for schoolchildren dedicated to values-driven journalism. He is a graduate of the Columbia University Journalism School and Cambridge University. (
