Social media is being blamed for sowing division, which contributed to the attacks on the Washington Capitol Building and is undermining the fight against Covid-19. Action is needed. But who should decide, could that action undermine the principles of free expression, and what is the role of journalism in the mix?

Jillian York: Author of Silicon Values: The Future of Free Speech Under Surveillance Capitalism. Director for International Freedom of Expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Fellow Centre for Internet and Human Rights, Berlin.

Carole Cadwalladr:  Investigative journalist, member of the alternative ‘Real’ Facebook Oversight Board, finalist 2019 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting alongside The New York Times reporters, for coverage of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Moderated by Meera Selva, deputy director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.
