Chris Elliott Advisor

Chris Elliott was the readers’ editor at The Guardian until 2016 and before that was the managing editor between 2000 and 2010. He was also a member of the United Kingdom’s major journalism training body, the NCTJ, where he was the chair of the accreditation committee, which vetted applications to run NCTJ training courses. 

Chris is a former Director of the Ethical Journalism Network, and has trained and lectured widely in Africa, Turkey and Europe on the principles of ethical journalism and good governance. He was a trustee from 2015-2021 and remains involved with the EJN in an advisory capacity.

He was formerly a trustee of the International News Safety Institute (INSI), a director of the Society of Editors, a member of the Nomination Committee of the Reuters Founders Share Company, and is a former chair of Concern Worldwide UK, an international aid charity. His areas of special interest are self-regulation of the press, media law, diversity and training.

Chris is also the former editorial standards consultant for the UK self-regulatory body IMPRESS.

He has worked as the home affairs correspondent for the Sunday Telegraph, chief reporter for the Sunday Correspondent and assistant news editor for the Times. In 1995, he joined The Guardian’s newsdesk and was part of the team that won the UKPG Team Reporting Award for the Jonathan Aitken investigation.
