Source Transparency Indicators

Workshop: Source Transparency Indicators

Date: 30 August 2018

Venue: EBU Brussels Office, Av des Arts 56, 1000 Brussels

Background: One of the outcomes of the High Level Expert Group on Disinformation, convened by the European Commission to elaborate on recommendations on how to tackle the online disinformation, was to develop a self-regulatory Code of Practice addressed to platforms and advertisers.

As part of the process to create this Code of Practice the MediaRoad/European Broadcasting Union, the European Federation Journalists and News Media Europe held a discussion on defining “Source Transparency Indicators”, an idea that is a part of the final recommendations of the HLEG. The aim of developing Source Transparency Indicators is to ensure that quality and trusted news is substantially available and easily findable in the online space.

This workshop gathered experts in this field, including EJN Director Chris Elliott and EJN adviser Jean-Paul Marthoz, with the intention of developing a document with a definition of “Source Transparency” and concrete proposals on setting up source transparency indicators of the news in order to improve the findability and trust of quality news. This document will be shared with the Multistakeholder Forum and feed into the work on the Code of Practice.
