Ethics as a business model for quality journalism

The Ethical Journalism Network’s Director of Campaigns and Communications Tom Law contributed to a debate on Ethics as a Business Model at an event in Lisbon organised by the Sindicato dos Jornalistas to mark World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2018.

In his presentation, Tom drew on the EJN’s recent report, Trust in Ethical Journalism – The Key to Media Futures which looks at how the communications revolution is continuing to pose more questions than answers over a public crisis of confidence, both in democracy and in sources of public information.

Tom also shared the results from the Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey project in partnership with the European Federation of Journalists and UNESCO. As part of the programme the EJN has pioneered an Ethical Media Audit with leading editors, media owners and journalists from across the world. The audit is a simple tool that can help media monitor their own performance and also help develop ways of improving public trust and market confidence in their brand. It provides a basic structure for an Internal Standards Report for internal auditing of media that is developed and implemented by the media house itself
