The EJN in Tunisia

The resignation of the Tunisian commission tasked with reforming the country’s media amidst claims of government censorship on July 5th 2012 has created a crisis over media reform and the fate of new media laws. The Ethical Journalism Network which has been following the situation closely believes that Tunisia could provide models for self-regulation of media that could be applied across the Middle East and North Africa. But accusations that the new democratically-elected Islamist government is returning to old, repressive ways have raised serious concerns. The EJN is planning to work on confidence-building measures with journalists and media leaders to help break the current deadlock.
