Background:
The EJN’s Tom Law will take part in a panel/workshop on “Media and migration” within the International conference “ProLanguage – The protective role of languages in refugee settings” at Reading University on 21 September 2018.
This conference is the last event of a 18-month international network project funded by the ESRC-UK which has involved among the others the Universities of Reading, Patras, Athens, Beirut, Palermo, Konstanz, Geneve and several NGOs from the UK, Italy, Lebanon, Greece, Spain.
The aim of the project is to build a strong international network to tackle linguistic issues in refugee settings, i.e. interpreting, translating, language and healthcare, language teaching. The Reading conference is the last meeting of the network, after a workshops in Patras (May 2017), Palermo (September 2017), Beirut (November 2017) and several smaller meetings among the participants to the network.
The final outcome of the project will be a report and a set of recommendations (to be sent to the ESRC, the European Union, and national bodies) on needs (for interventions and for implementing policies at local, national and international level) and best practice, in order to circulate materials and ideas across Europe at several levels, and to give suggestions to policy makers.
The 2-day conference at Reading will gather all the participants from the network, plus academics, teachers, policy makers and media representatives from the UK and participating countries.
There will also be an exhibition by the Italian photo-reporter Luca Prestia, who has just finished a project on the Ventimiglia border, and a social event with the band Limpopo Groove: a band made of ‘refugee’ and local musicians based in Reading.
