Setting Your Moral Compass: A Workbook for Applied Ethics in OSINT

The Stanley Center for Peace and Security has published a new workbook for applied ethics in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) entitled “Setting Your Moral Compass” .

Created by Melissa Hanham, this workbook presents six case studies that draw on real ethical dilemmas faced by open source analysts in the course of their work and aims to support analysts in thinking through ethical dilemmas when using open source data, based on the deepest and most frequent concerns encountered by analysts in the arms control and nonproliferation world. Each case study is analyzed using the Markkula Framework for Ethical Decision Making, a step-by-step approach for working through an ethical challenge that encourages the OSINT practitioner or student to refine their process for ethical decision-making.

Inspired by “Feeling the Burden: Ethical Challenges and Practices in Open Source Analysis and Journalism“, the recent collaboration between The Stanley Center and the Ethical Journalism Network, the “Setting Your Moral Compass” workbook and resources are tools to enable open source analysts to support their ethical decision-making.
