The Ethical Journalism Network is looking for a new Director and CEO

Help us build fair, honest and transparent journalism.

The EJN is a media development charity, which works in over 30 countries with publishers, editors and journalists to support ethical journalism and good governance. Since its inception five years ago the EJN has more than doubled in size under its founder and now President, Aidan White. For the last year, Chris Elliott has worked with Aidan to oversee that transition. Now we are looking for someone who can build and develop its core mission in a digital age.

The EJN works with journalists to give them the tools for ethical journalism based on high ethical standards, principles of truth and accuracy, independence, fairness and impartiality, humanity and accountability

In the last year the EJN has worked in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and China to help journalists through the provision of education, training and the publication of useful research.

It is a small team supported by 60 organisations around the world.

Job Description

Recruiter: Ethical Journalism Network

Location: Working from home but based in the London area

Salary: According to experience

Hours: Full time, occasionally working weekends with time off in lieu

Contract: Permanent. The EJN is an equal opportunities employer that positively promotes all forms of flexible working, including job sharing.

Closing date: 9 November 2018

The role is to manage, organise and administer the affairs of the EJN on behalf of the Board of Trustees. This includes:

  • Developing and delivering an activities programme that advances the education, skills and competence of people engaged in all forms of journalistic work at all levels of media and across all platforms of media throughout the world.
  • Strengthening the strategic partnerships of the EJN with the global media community and with the EJN’s strategic partners including donors, universities, media support groups and civil society.

It is essential that the successful candidate is a dynamic self-starter with substantial media experience, including digital journalism skills. He or she should also have management experience, preferably in a similar ‘values’ led organisation.

It is desirable that the applicant should comprehend and share the values of the EJN and have a background in dealing with media ethics as part of their work. We are also looking for a candidate with some fundraising experience.

In addition, as the job is primarily London based, we want someone who has a ‘right to live’ in the UK but who is willing to travel extensively.

The right candidate will have good communications skills and will represent the EJN with confidence and flair.
