Hate Speech Against Migrants and Refugees The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) organised a symposium on hate speech against migrants and refugees in the media on 13 December 2017 in Cairo, Egypt, in collaboration with Egypt Media Development Program (EMDP). In 2015, the world witnessed its highest levels of forced displacement recorded since World War II, with a considerable increase in the number of refugees, asylum-seekers, and internally displaced people across various regions of the world – from Africa to the Middle East and South Asia. While the so-called migrant crisis and its impact on Europe have dominated public debate, much less sustained attention has been dedicated to the processes of migration and displacement in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, despite the fact that they have carried the lion’s share of the burden. The Ethical Journalism Network’s Tom Law spoke at the event and conducted an interview with Nile News. The EJN’s participation at the Spread No Hate Symposium was also covered by El Mundo and Al Watan.
