THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN PROMOTING PEACE AND SOCIAL STABILITY

EJN board member Dr. Zahera Harb participated in a UNDP and Maharat Foundation peace building workshop in Lebanon last week.

The meeting brought together experts, media executives and international organisations that have technical, practical and legal expertise in media regulation in pluralistic democratic yet divided societies.

The two day workshop shared comparative and diverse international experiences that will be compiled into a policy paper that will help in developing the framework of media regulation in Lebanon.

As part of her contribution, Zahera presented the EJN test for hate speech which can be downloaded in Arabic and over 20 other languages

Media Development in the Digital Age: Five Ways to Engage in Internet Governance
The digital convergence means that how the Internet develops going forward — both in terms of policy and technology — will shape the very environment in which all other media operate. This report makes the case to this community that they can, and must, engage in the decision-making bodies that are shaping Internet governance (IG) to ensure that the Internet — and the growing media sphere it sustains — remains open, pluralistic, and democratic.

Migration was the issue of the year in 2016 and it will likely remain important in 2017. The topic is, however, just as hotly debated as it is poorly understood. The so-called "refugee crisis" in Europe and the omnipresent images of overfilled boats arriving on Mediterranean shores give the impression that migration is threatening to spin out of control and that radical action is needed to curtail the uncontrollable influx of migrants. The fear of mass migration has fueled the rise of extreme nationalist parties throughout Europe and helped Donald Trump win the presidential election in the U.S. - The Spiegal

On 10 January 2017 the EJN published Ethics in the News, which looks at how media covered the UK vote to leave the European Union, the Trump election and the influence of fake news. We hear about the assault on free expression in Turkey, and the information war between India and Pakistan. The report examines the rise of hate speech, particularly in Asia, including a glossary for hate in Hong Kong. In Africa, we learn about the EJN’s ‘Turning the Page of Hate campaign. Media are warned that there is no honour in the so-called “honour killings” in Pakistan. We also hear about the success of the Panama Papers and get advice on how to deal with sources from the journalist that helped Edward Snowden reveal the secrets of United States’ global surveillance and snooping. It also features a thoughtful examination of how we use images to tell stories about migration.
