The EJN’s Chair, Dorothy Byrne, presented the EJN’s new guidelines for migration reporting at Prix Italia’s conference on migration in Lampedusa on 1 October.
Dorothy, who is the head of news and current affairs at Channel 4 in the UK also outlined the challenges faced by news media when covering migration, that were outlined in the EJN’s Moving Stories report.
The report found that despite many examples of excellent coverage journalists often fail to tell the full story and routinely fall into sensationalism and propaganda traps laid by politicians.
To help journalists counter these threats, the EJN’s migration guide is a tool for media to use when reporting on migration and to analyse news coverage.

The Union of Journalists in Finland is arranging its biggest annual networking and training event on October 14 in Helsinki which will include a special series of panel discussions on Europe’s refugee crisis and other global issues. EJN board member Chris Elliott will be taking part in a panel on “Stories that Need to Be Heard: Refugees in the Media”.
In partnership with the Uganda Journalist’s Union, the Ethical Journalism Network is organising a workshop for leading editors and senior journalists from the East Africa and Lakes region to find ways to improve how media report on migration and hate speech.
The Council of Europe, European Federation of Journalists, UNESCO, and other partners have helped us translate the EJN 5-point test for hate speech into 7 new languages including Albanian, Dutch, Indonesian, Macedonian, Serbian, Turkish, Ukrainian. The test is already available in Arabic, English and French.
