WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY 2017
Earlier today the EJN's Tom Law took part in a roundtable discussion on the impact fake news, hate speech and "post-truth" mechanisms at a meeting of Nordic Council of Ministers at UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day celebrations in Jakarta Indonesia. The meeting was attended by academics, journalist unions (IFJ and EFJ) and organisations including Google and the World Association of Newspapers. At this meeting Tom talked about:
  • How ethical journalism can be an inspiration for free expression and media literacy
  • How the EJN's hate-speech test is useful tool for journalists and media literacy policy makers.
  • How greater transparency is needed over the means by which social media and tech giants moderate their content.
  • Encouraging a more constructive dialogue between news media and platforms like Google and Facebook in regard to accountability, pluralism and accuracy of online information.
WHAT DOES ETHICAL JOURNALISM MEAN TO YOU?
Over the next two days the EJN will be asking delegates at the World Press Freedom Day conference in Jakarta: "
  • "What does ethical journalism mean to you?"
  • "Why is ethical journalism essential for democracy?"
  • "Why is ethical reporting of migration important?"
You can find the first one here with Erol Onderoglu the Reporters Without Borders representative in Turkey.
