Director’s Letter: September 2014

During September our focus has been on the continuing crisis facing media in Egypt; ways of keeping the lid on hate speech when reporting religion; and opening up a fresh discussion on setting standards for responsible use of information on the Internet. At a recent meeting in Kiev, the EJN made an intervention calling for the media development community to work together to promote more ethical communications on the web without compromising the freedoms that come with the expansion of the Internet.

Why Ethical Journalism Needs a Magna Carta for the Web

This week Tim Berners-Lee, the British inventor of the world-wide web, called for a new global charter to protect internet freedom from threats by governments and corporations. His intervention provides a welcome opportunity for a new discussion about control of the web. At the same time it opens the door to a debate about ethics, quality and responsible use of information that should interest all journalists and the media development community.

Tim Berners-Lee Calls for Internet Bill of Rights to Ensure Greater Privacy

The inventor of the world wide web has warned that the freedom of the internet is under threat by governments and corporations interested in controlling the web. Tim Berners-Lee, the British computer scientist who invented the web 25 years ago, called on Saturday for a bill of rights that would guarantee the independence of the internet and ensure users’ privacy.
