6th Bali Media Forum

The Thomson Foundation, in partnership with the Indonesian Press Council and the Institute for Peace and Democracy, held the 6th Bali Media Forum Open Goals: Ethics in the information game in Nusa Dua, Bali from 8 to 10 October.

This international conference explored how journalism and independent media play a vital part in building a new vision for information in the internet age. It addressed the blurring line between of the role of bloggers, NGOs, journalists, private companies and the state as information providers to the public through established media, on-line and social media.

Topics and discussions included:

  • A Level Playing Field: The role of the search engines, service providers and regulators
  • Respect: Campaigning for Quality Standards On-Line
  • Expanding the Pitch: New initiatives for quality in the public information space
  • Ethics in the Public Information Sphere – A new vision
  • Professional Tackle: How the Asia Network of Press Councils can meet the on-line challenge
  • Everyone Can Play: Using new media to empower communities

In today’s digital world the state, private corporations and civil society – individually and collectively – can join with media in promoting ethical principles in the use of information.

The conference received financial support from the Norwegian Foreign Ministry. It took place in advance of the 7th Bali Democracy Forum which brought together heads of state and public officials from more than 70 countries. Participants in the Bali Media Forum were able to attend key sessions of the Bali Democracy Forum.
